The endorsement of John Kasich by the New York Times — and the varied reasons for disqualifying Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, and Marco Rubio — open the way for the only candidate that has been a Governor and created a balanced budget to first win the Republican nomination and then win over all others, most of whom are not Democratic party loyalists.

The looming indictment of Hillary Clinton for ordering, in writing, the by-passing of security protocols for thousands of classified messages, at least 22 of which are in the sensitive compartmented / special access domain, opens the way for a serious national conversation leading toward a sanity nomination on the right and a justice accommodation on the left — it's time we restore integrity to our electoral process and give true inclusive democracy a chance.

Kasich's early validation in the primaries would also dissuade Michael Bloomberg from running — and Kasich is probably the only candidate capable of easing Bloomberg's legitimate concerns about the field that Tom Friedman described in his article, “None of the Above.”

Hope For Imagining a World Beyond Corporate Control

Finding ways to democratically control our common wealth, from Quebec to India

An excerpt from the recent book SOS: Alternatives to Capitalism (New Internationalist Publications).

The commons is not just a battlefield between corporate predators and those who resist them – it is also a source of hope for those willing to imagine a world beyond capitalism. It represents a space between the private market and the political state in which humanity can control and democratically root our common wealth. Both the market and the state have proved inadequate for this purpose. In different ways, they have both led to a centralization of power and decision-making. Both private monopolies and state bureaucracies have proved incapable of maintaining the ecological health of the commons or managing the fair and equitable distribution of its benefits.

Zika Virus May be First GMO Disaster of Planetary Ecosytem

Recent media reports of the explosive and alarming spread of the Zika virus appears to be due, according to this report, to the release of genetically modified mosquitos into the wild, which resulted from cross-breeding of the GM mosquito released with wild mosquitos, creating favorable conditions for the Zika virus to propagate itself. The area of Brazil where the GM mosquitos were released is the very same area where the “out of the blue” Zika outbreak emerged. In releasing the mosquitos in the wild, Maryland company, Intrexon, recently purchased by British company, Oxitec, failed to test what would happen from the unprecedented action of releasing Frankenstein mosquitos. No one anticipated the mosquitoes that were supposed to be infertile and die off are replicating and infecting humans with this horrific virus. We may be witnessing – and soon suffering over a massive area, or the entire planet – from the first large-scale GMO disaster of our ecosystem. Another article below states eugenics maven Bill Gates gave grant money to Oxitec, hence this may not be a “accident” if it results in population reduction.

Why Smart Cities still aren’t working for us after 20 years. And how we can fix them.

(I was recently asked to give evidence to the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development during the development of their report on Smart Cities and Infrastructure. This article is based on my presentation, which you can find here).

The goal of a Smart City is to invest in technology in order to create economic, social and environmental improvements. That is an economic and political challenge, not a technology trend; and it is an imperative challenge because of the nature and extent of the risks we face as a society today. Whilst the demands created by urbanisation and growth in the global population threaten to outstrip the resources available to us, those resources are under threat from man-made climate change; and we live in a world in which many think that access to resources is becoming dangerously unfair.

Anonymous is almost certainly not what you think it is. You have to live it to understand it, its implications, its functioning, and its place in society. Gabrielle Coleman lived it, as a fully disclosed academic anthropologist. This is her story as much as theirs.

The structure of Anonymous is like the structure of the internet: multiple channels, multiple entry points, self healing patches, and lots of redundancy. (Also lots of swearing, lots of personal attacks, and lots of suspicions. Testosterone is involved.) This enables a totally flat organization to achieve in minutes what giant corporations and government take years to effect. The exhilaration, the joy, the satisfaction participants savor is incomparable. Anonymous is far more than a labor of love; it is idealists executing on their dreams. Everyone should be jealous.
