John Kerry

I wrote this with John Kerry and Michele Flourney in mind, but regardless of who is eventually made Secretary of Defense, the core concept remains: the center of gravity for massive change in the US Government and in the nature of how the US Government ineracts with the rest of the world, lies within the Department of Defense, not the Department of State.

John Kerry, Global Engagement, and National Integrity

It troubles me that John Kerry is resisting going to Defense when he can do a thousand times more good there instead of sitting at State being, as Madeline Albright so famously put it, a “gerbil on a wheel.”  Defense is the center of gravity for the second Obama Administration, and the one place where John Kerry can truly make a difference.  Appoint Michele Flournoy as Deputy and his obvious replacement down the road, and you have an almost instant substantive make-over of Defense.  Regardless of who ends up being confirmed, what follows is a gameplan for moving DoD away from decades of doing the wrong things righter, and toward a future of doing the right things affordably, scalably, and admirably.

Marijuana Legalization for Personal Use Reaches New High in Poll

JUSTIN SINK – The Hill

We should remember that it was the states that ended Alcohol Prohibition. It began just as this is beginning, and went up quite quickly to the Federal level. I am not sure that this will happen the same way. Look for this: When it becomes politically dangerous to be anti-Marijuana. It will happen quicker with Representatives, because of their smaller concentrated populations, district by di! strict. I think this will drive the Senate to change as well.

But the opposition may be so bitter, that it is one of the first of the new development trends shifting power to the states. This is going to depend on what the Obama administration does.

A record 48 percent of Americans support legalizing small amounts of marijuana for personal use, just one week after three states voted to legalize the drug under some conditions – including Colorado and Washington's historic votes to allow the personal use and sale of pot.

NIGHTWATCH: Communist China Focuses on Corruption

Corruption, Cultural Intelligence, Ethics, Government

China: Update. The 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China concluded on 14 November after the Congress elected a new Central Committee and a new Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.

Comment: NightWatch will report at greater length as details warrant. The two most impressive themes that emerged from the early speeches were that corruption is a threat to the survival of the party and possibly the communist state itself and that the new leadership will have no latitude to compromise the communist political leadership. Political reform means measures to ease social tension and increase participation within the communist system. Put another way, free market economics with greater individual entrepreneurship will not lead to Western-style democracy or a multiparty system.

Mini-Me: CIA Bimbo Eruption or Hit Job with Vickers Replacing Patreaus? Photos Updated 14 Nov

Cultural Intelligence, Government
Who? Mini-Me?

Huh?

“The harassing e-mails Broadwell sent to the woman [evidently from Patreus's personal email account and computer] said things such as “I know what you did,” “back off” and “stay away from my guy,” a government official said.”

“This is about something else entirely, and the truth will come out,” Broadwell’s dad, Paul Krantz, told the Daily News outside his home in Bismarck, N.D.

“There is a lot more that is going to come out,” said Krantz, claiming he was not allowed to elaborate. “You wait and see. There’s a lot more here than meets the eye.”

PICTURED: The State Department military liaison [sic — just a local charity family services liaison according to other reports] who sparked revelations of Petraeus affair after complaining to FBI about ‘jealous' mistress

Jill Kelley Pre-Bimbo

Phi Beta Iota:  Mini-Me is evidently captivated by the photos–note the strategically unbuttoned buttons–but the story is still developing.  Jill Kelley (not to be confused with porn star Jill Kelly) is shown here to the right.  The FBI would not normally get into an email harrassment case — there is much more to this than we have been told.  For this to go down as it has, three separate powers had to want Petraeus' head on a platter:

01  CENTCOM would have heard of this first, via the Command Group.  One call to the General and this would have been nipped in the bud.  Somebody at CENTCOM chose to let this go to the next level [it is highly unlikely FBI would have acted on emails as described].

02  FBI, which does not do anything at this level without the explicit approval of the Director and probably in this instance the Attorney General, chose to bring the hammer down instead of doing a courtesy notification.

03  The DNI, himself known for having a harem in the past, chose to hang General Patraeus.  This may have something to do with Mike Vickers wanting to move to CIA, and then the back-stabbing will be completed with the DNI being phased out awhile Vickers is restored to the role of Director of Central Intelligence.  Vickers was a desk officer at CIA for three years, before that a special operations enlisted man promoted to company grade.  He has been described as an inoffensive wall-flower.

SchwartzReport: Frank Rich on Fantasyland — A Public Without the Truth Gets a Government Far Removed From the Truth

Fantasyland

Denial has poisoned the GOP and threatens the rest of the country too

EXTRACT:

The country has a larger problem-‘intellectual nihilism,” as the writer Noam Scheiber recently labeled it. Since 9/11, often but not always under the right’s aegis, truth has been destabilized in America. The Bush administration’s contempt for what it dismissed as the ‘reality-based community” was vindicated when it successfully ginned up a war by convincing Americans that the 9/11 hijackers were Iraqis and that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. Our susceptibility to elaborate, beautifully wrought myths remains intact-whether we’re being spun by politicians, captains of finance pumping up a bubble, or sports heroes like Lance Armstrong and Joe Paterno. The news business, which we once counted on to vet hoaxes and fictions, is now so insecure about its existential future that it was cowed to some extent by the Scarboroughs, Noonans, and Roves, with most of the networks, not just Fox, ignoring the ! statistical data of Silver and others and instead predicting a long, nail-biting Election Night. (In reality, the election was called for Obama at 11:12 p.m. EST on NBC, just twelve minutes after it had been in 2008.) Our remaining journalistic institutions have even outsourced what used to be the very core of their craft, fact-checking, to surrogates relegated to gimmicky sidebars (awarding Pinocchios and ‘pants on fire”). The fact-checkers have predictably become partisan targets, only further destabilizing the whole notion of what is meant by ‘news.”

Daniel Patrick Moynihan might be surprised to learn that he is now remembered most for his oft-repeated maxim that ‘everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts.” Yet today most Americans do see themselves as entitled to their own facts, with one of our two major political parties setting a powerful example. For all the hand-wringing about Washington’s chronic dysfunction and lack of bipartisanship, it may be the wholesale denial of reality by the opposition and its fellow travelers that is the biggest obstacle to our country moving forward under a much-empowered Barack Obama in his second term. If truth can’t command a mandate, no one can.

Yoda: Dynamic Causation vs. Systemic Causation

Further commentary:

IDEN C:  John Pourdehnad just gave a talk, and I thought David Ing's notes from it were good reading. John more or less channels Ackoff, but also relates it to contemporary efforts.  About half way down he says this:

Mechanical systems may explain through cause and effect, but social systems are producer-product” and then he explains further.

IDEN A  might object that there should be one universal description of something like causation for all systems.  I sympathize, but if 'cause' continues to work for the physicists, I really don't want to get in their way (though some might argue that it is a problem in non-classical physics).  I just want something that works for social systems, where we have the symbol as well as the physical referent to deal with (Peirce), plus the purposes of the symbolizers, and that's not physics.

IDEN B:  Ether matters.  The Eastern school of the space between the things, the relationships between any two things and all other things, the time, the context, the phase of the moon.  I believe science is starting to discover that that there is no “nothing” only, there is “something” everywhere, we just cannot see it.  Jump to 26 dimensions instead of 3 or 4.  Bottom line:  there is no one answer, only infinite answers, and the only way to get a tentative grip on infinite answers is to have infinite diversity of minds speaking with clarity and grounded in integrity.
