We're Eating What? The Drugstore in U.S. Meat.

Martha Rosenberg, AlterNet, 2 December 2012

Food consumers seldom hear about the drugs oestradiol-17, zeranol, trenbolone acetate and melengestrol acetate and the names are certainly not on meat labels. But those synthetic growth hormones are central to U.S. meat production, especially beef, and the reason Europe has banned a lot of U.S. meat since 1989.

Zeranol, widely used as a growth promoter in the U.S. beef industry, is a “powerful estrogenic chemical, as demonstrated by its ability to stimulate growth and proliferation of human breast tumor cells” similar to the “known carcinogen diethylstilbestrol (DES),”

Phi Beta Iota:  The ten high-level threats to humanity, eight of which are being ignored by most governments, include “Other Atrocities.”  Normally defined as a mix of trafficking in women and children as well as body parts (with kidnapping and murder), we now include in “Other Atrocities” the willful corruption of governments that leads to the poisoning of entire populations; to the proliferation of genetic mutations in crops, animals, and humans; and to the wholesale increase of prevalent persistent disease such as asthma in poor kids living near highways.

German man locked up over HVB bank allegations may have been telling truth

Gustl Mollath was put in a psychiatric unit for claiming his wife was involved in money-laundering at the Bavarian bank. But seven years on evidence has emerged that could set him free

in Berlin

guardian.co.uk,

A German man committed to a high-security psychiatric hospital after being accused of fabricating a story of money-laundering activities at a major bank is to have his case reviewed after evidence has emerged proving the validity of his claims.

In a plot worthy of a crime blockbuster, Gustl Mollath, 56, was submitted to the secure unit of a psychiatric hospital seven years ago after court experts diagnosed him with paranoid personality disorder following his claims that staff at the Hypo Vereinsbank (HVB) – including his wife, then an assets consultant at HVB – had been illegally smuggling large sums of money into Switzerland.

Mollath was tried in 2006 after his ex-wife accused him of causing her physical harm. He denied the charges, claiming she was trying to sully his name in the light of the evidence he allegedly had against her. He was admitted to the clinic, where he has remained against his will ever since.

But recent evidence brought to the attention of state prosecutors shows that money-laundering activities were indeed practiced over several years by members of staff at the Munich-based bank, the sixth-largest private financial institute in Germany, as detailed in an internal audit report carried out by the bank in 2003. The report, which has now been posted online, detailed illegal activities including money-laundering and aiding tax evasion. A number of employees, including Mollath's wife, were subsequently sacked following the bank's investigation.

The “Mollath affair”, as it has been dubbed by the German media, has taken on such political dimensions that it now threatens to bring down the government of Bavaria. Under the weight of public and political pressure Horst Seehofer, the prime minister of the rich southern state and a member of the Christian Social Union (CSU) – the sister party to Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats – has now called for the case to be reopened, amid charges that Mollath was possibly the victim of a gross miscarriage of justice.

90% of peer-reviewed clinical research is completely false – GreenMedInfo

GreenMedInfo Nov 9, 2012

A seismic shift is occurring in the field of evidence-based medicine that a rare few are aware of, but which will (and likely already does) affect everyone, as the standard of medical care today largely follows from this model.

The very life’s blood of ‘evidence-based’ medicine — peer-reviewed and published clinical research results – which legitimizes the entire infrastructure and superstructure upon which conventional medical knowledge and practice is erected, has been revealed as mostly and patently false.

Case in point: in a 2005 essay, “Why Most Published Research Findings are False,” and which is the most downloaded document of all time on PLoS, the Public Library of Medicine’s peer-reviewed, open access journal, John P. A Ioannidis explains in detail how “It can be proven that most claimed research findings are false.” And that “for many current scientific fields, claimed research findings may often be simply accurate measures of the prevailing bias.”

The Atlantic published a piece on Ioannidis’ work, back in 2010, titled “Lies, Damned Lies, and Medical Science,” well worth reading, and which opened with “Much of what medical researchers conclude in their studies is misleading, exaggerated, or flat-out wrong. So why are doctors – to a striking extent – still drawing upon misinformation in their everyday practice?

SchwartzReport: Drug Industry Subversion of Medical Literature

07 Health, Commerce, Corruption

For several years now I have been writing about the corruption of the medical literature in the service of the Illness Profit System (See An Appraisal of The Illness Profit System http://www.explorejournal.com/article/S1550-8307%2810%2900291-0/fulltext). This trend has received very little! attention in the corporate media (this is the first piece I have seen in a major newspaper in months) but it has very dangerous implications for you and your family, and is specifically designed to mislead your local doctor, who guides his practice based on the papers in medical journals.

As Drug Industry’s Influence Over Research Grows, so Does the Potential for Bias

For drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline, the 17-page article in the New England Journal of Medicine represented a coup.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership: This is What Corporate Governance Looks Like

By: Andrew Gavin Marshall

The following is the first installment of a three-part exclusive for Occupy.com on the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Originally published at Occupy.com

In 2008, the United States Trade Representative Susan Schwab announced the U.S. entry into the Trans-Pacific Partnership talks as “a pathway to broader Asia-Pacific regional economic integration.” Originating in 2005 as a “Strategic Economic Partnership” between a few select Pacific countries, the TPP has, as of October 2012, expanded to include 11 nations in total: the United States, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Chile, New Zealand, Australia, Brunei, Singapore, Vietnam and Malaysia, with the possibility of several more joining in the future.

What makes the TPP unique is not simply the fact that it may be the largest “free trade agreement” ever negotiated, nor even the fact that only two of its roughly 26 articles actually deal with “trade,” but that it is also the most secretive trade negotiations in history, with no public oversight, input, or consultations.

Robert Steele: Big Four Audit Firms “Not Our Job to Detect Fraud”

Commerce, Corruption

I do not make this stuff up.  Of course one has to recognize that “best practices” are defined to favor the larger players, and the larger players are very interested in things like import-export pricing fraud and other less than ethical tax avoidance strategies.  But the idea that the Big Four do not consider it part of their job to detect fraud when evaluating companies for acquisition, I find reprehensible.  In addition, Hewlett-Packard was insanely cavalier at multiple levels, not least of all in assigning $6.6 billion as the intangible asset value of “good will” in the purchase of Autonomy — for that alone everyone at HP who signed off on the deal should be walking the plank.  What troubles me as I continue to reflect on the importance of transparency, truth, and trust, is that fraud is so heavily embedded into our politics and economics that the Big Four feel absolutely no shame in adopting such an outrageous position.  As a society, we are broken.

Hewlett-Packard's Autonomy Allegations: A Material Writedown Puts All Four Audit Firms On The Spot

Francine McKenna

Forbes, 20 November 2012

You can bring a Big Four audit firm to court for missing a major accounting fraud but it’s much harder to bring the auditor to justice.

Deloitte was the auditor of Autonomy, a UK software firm acquired by HP in 2011 for $11.7 billion. HP announced today it is writing down more than $5 billion, or almost half of the acquisition price, because of “serious accounting improprieties, misrepresentation and disclosure failures”.
