ECUADOR INITIATIVE: Transition Proposals Toward a Commons-Oriented Economy and Society

Sponsored by the National Institute of Advanced Studies of Ecuador, carried out by the Free/Libre Open Knowledge (FLOK) Society.

John Restakis and Michel Bauwens on the FLOK Society Transition Project in Ecuador

My talk for the democracy conference in Amsterdam, Crosstalk 2013 | Borders to Cross, on the p2p transition process in Ecuador.

It is followed by the first installment of a diary by co-researcher John Restakis.

Watch the video here:

John Restakis writes:

“It is now six weeks since I arrived in Ecuador as part of an international team of researchers and activists that are working with the government to radically transform the nation’s economic model.

John Restakis

In what may be one of the most innovative change programs in Latin America, the administration of Rafael Correa is proposing to transition from a neo-liberal, free market economic model to what they are calling a social knowledge economy based on a combination of commons-based economics and the promotion of open knowledge systems. It’s heady stuff and the project is placing Ecuador at the forefront of global efforts to advance human knowledge as a commons and to apply this knowledge to the creation of a new economic model based on the commons, co-operative models of production, open-source systems of sharing, and free access to information.

John Robb: One Man Can Change the World…

Update on One Man vs. the World

When I wrote Brave New War back in 2006, I made this aggressive projection on how rapid technological change would change warfare:

The threshold necessary for small groups to conduct global warfare has finally been breached, and we are only starting to feel its effects.  Over time, in as little as perhaps twenty years and as the leverage of technology increases, this threshold will finally reach its culmination — with the ability of one man to declare war on the world and win.

It seems that we are on track with my projection.  Recently, we saw individuals leveraging the power of computers and networks launch (open source) protests that toppled governments.   It didn't end there.  Edward Snowden (love him or hate him) proved it is possible to wage a one-man information war against the biggest, most powerful national security establishment in the world.   The US government.  A country that spends more than all other countries in the world combined on national defense. He was able to:

  • steal the crown jewels of the US security system by himself,
  • initiate an information war against the entire US national security bureaucracy while eluding capture, and
  • initiate economic disruptions that have done billions of dollars in damage to US corporations (from Boeing to RSA).

NIGHTWATCH: Foolish US Statements on Syria

Syria: Special comment. The Ba'athist government in Damascus appears to be holding its own. The best indication of increased stability is that the focus of most combat reports is the city of Aleppo, most of which has been under opposition control. This means the government and its allies are taking the fight to the anti-government fighting groups.

The security situation generated [foolish] comments by two senior US officials.

Marcus Aurelius: Military Leadership — the Many Failures and the Few Successes

Corruption, Ethics, Military
Marcus Aurelius
Marcus Aurelius

This a “three-fer” on leadership and officership.  It provides some theory (from a Naval Special Warfare perspective), a media summary of how too many of our senior officers are not getting it right, and one officer's list of historical anecdotes when it was done right.

* The headliner, ADM McRaven's speech to USMA Class of 2015 500th Night, is the PDF file.  He gives  the theoretical overview.

* First below is the transmittal message for ADM McRaven's address.

* Second below is a counterpoint to ADM McRaven, a wave-top Washington Post summary of senior leader failures in leadership, judgment, and integrity.  While I think it is error-free, my sense is that the reality is several orders of magnitude worse than the info Post provides suggests.

* Third below is an address by LTC(Ret) Guy Lofaro, a former instructor at West Point.  From his own career, he provides some anecdotes that serve to provide illustrative examples to ADM McRaven's theory.
