Somewhere along the line a marketer cooked up volume, variety, and velocity to describe Big Data. Well, VVV is good but now we have VVVVV. Want to know more about “value” and “veracity”? Navigate to “2 More Big Data V’s—Value and Veracity.” The new Vs are slippery. How does one demonstrate value. The write up does not nail down the concept. There are MBA type references to ROI, use cases, and brand. Not much numerical evidence or a credible analytic foundation is presented. Isn’t “value” a matter of perception. Numbers may not be needed. Veracity is also a bit mushy. What about Brian Williams’ and his oft repeated “conflation”? What about marketing collateral for software vendors in search of a sale? I typed 25 and moved on. Neither a big number nor much in the way of big data.
Trust Chain: Low (Media), Medium (Search Engines), High (Human)
It is only a matter of time before trusted aggregators and human curators will become the main sources of reliable information for most people. In fact, the January release of the 2015 Edelman Trust Barometer shows that for the first time ever, the informed public trusts more search engines – aka Google – than traditional news and media outlets. Even more interesting is the fact that “Seventy-two percent trust information posted by friends and family on social media, blogs and other digital sites, while 70 percent trust content posted by academic experts.” as it highlights the fact that Google and search engines may be only an intermediary step in the journey toward a news ecosystem that will see trusted human editors, experts and curators for individual subjects who aggregate and curate content from multiple sources as the key reference points for news. This is must-read data for anyone interested in seeing where the future of news and search are headed. Enlightening data. 9/10

Industry and government in the United States are addressing the task of dealing with ICT (Information and Communications Technologies) and its primary attribute, the Internet. The power of the Internet as a communications and marketing tool has become recognized as mission critical and is causing upheavals and reengineering throughout most industrial sectors and government agencies. This document presents a look at the decentralized phenomena known as Network Armies and proposes that a focus from the perspective of various user groups, along with the use of methodologies such as Cybernetics, will yield new and unimagined benefits in marketing and communications, new potential for private ownership of data, and a new paradigm of individual control in communications and marketing.
