Murderous Tails, Murdered Dogs

When I watched NBC's “Nightly News” the first time they reported on the downing of the Malaysian passenger jet, they showed video footage at the Amsterdam Airport of the relatives of those who were on the plane that was shot down. What struck me was this: not a single one appeared to be crying or showing any emotion, they were all, without exception, quite subdued or quiet, as if someone in authority told them to shut up, and they were compliant. Even the NBC news reporter commented on how unemotional they were, even though they knew the plane their loved ones were on was shot down (or whatever, given what follows below). I wondered, did the people on this footage truly have any connection to who was on the plane, was the video footage somehow manipulated or staged? Is the tail wagging the dog?

Now, along comes a report in which a rebel commander, who was in the crash area, makes an insane-sounding, bizarre claim: that the bodies scattered around the site were not “fresh” and appeared to be dead for a few days.

Crowdsourced Crisis Map of UAV/Aerial Videos for Disaster Response

The first version of the Humanitarian UAV Network's Crisis Map of UAV/aerial videos is now live on the Network's website. The crowdsourced map features dozens of aerial videos of recent disasters. Like social media, this new medium—user-generated (aerial) content—can be used by humanitarian organizations to complement their damage assessments and thus improve situational awareness.

The purpose of this Humanitarian UAV Network (UAViators) map is not only to provide humanitarian organizations and disaster-affected communities with an online repository of aerial information on disaster damage to augment their situational awareness; this crisis map also serves to raise awareness on how to safely & responsibly use small UAVs for rapid damage assessments. This explains why users who upload new content to the map must confirm that they have read the UAViator‘s Code of Conduct. They also have to confirm that the videos conform to the Network's mission and that they do not violate privacy or copyrights. In sum, the map seeks to crowdsource both aerial footage and critical thinking for the responsible use of UAVs in humanitarian settings.

What if everything we know about poor countries' economies is totally wrong?

Dylan Matthews

VOX, 14 July 2014

As China and India continue their fairly rapid paces of economic growth, a greater and greater share of extreme poverty is going to be concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa. But if we're going to make progress there, we need to have good numbers about how various economies are faring, how income is distributed within them, and so forth.

The trouble, Simon Fraser University economist Morten Jerven argues, is that those numbers are often incomplete at best and downright false at worst. It's a problem that came into sharp relief recently when Nigeria “rebased” its GDP numbers, doubling its GDP in the process.

Big Data Stress at Both Ends of the Lens

An interesting article at the New Inquiry looks at the psychological effects of both surveying and being surveyed in the modern, data-driven world. It’s an interesting read, and I urge the curious to check out the whole piece. Writer Kate Crawford begins with ways intelligence agencies use big data and some of the stumbling blocks that come with it: No matter how much information they collect, the picture is incomplete. On the other hand, the more information they stockpile, the easier it is to miss important clues and fail to prevent a crisis. Agencies continue to search for frameworks that will help them put the pieces together faster.

Steps Offered to Improve Government Data Sites

The article on FlowingData titled How to Make Government Data Sites Better uses the Center for Disease Control website to illustrate measures the government should take to make their data more accessible and manageable. The first suggestion is to provide files in a useable format. By avoiding PDFs and providing CSV files (or even raw data), the user will be in a much better position to work with the data. Another suggestion is simply losing or simplifying the multipart form that makes search nearly impossible. The author also proposes clearer and more consistent annotation, using the following scenario to illustrate the point,
