Identifying and Structuring the Objectives of Terrorists

by Gregory L. Keeney and Detlof von Winterfeldt

Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events, August 2009

Phi Beta Iota: The report is interesting, and provides a useful methodology for approaching the relationship between intangible values and tangible manifestations, but it has one major flaw: it does not provide for the reality that expelling dictators and the US from the Middle East might be related to actually seeking to create a prosperous Middle East at peace.  Because of that flaw, the report also fails to point out that the best strategy against Al Qaeda is NOT to try to hunt down individual Al Qaeda members, but rather to pull out of the Middle East, stop supporting dictators (and Israel) and begin waging peace at one third the cost of war.  One should not throw stones when one lives in a glass house.  The USA today is a glass house on a sand foundation.

Barbara McNamara–Subversion from Within

Commissions, Corruption, Hill Letters & Testimony
Richard Wright

Behind Closed Doors

On 31 January 2011 Secrecy News returned to a subject that had been discussed earlier: the federal investigations of former NSA employee Thomas Drake for revealing classified information and of a former congressional intelligence committee staffer, Diane Roark, for assisting him. This latest article essentially quotes former NSA Deputy Director Barbara McNamara as saying Roark fell into the category of staffers that were, “overly intrusive and vindictive” and employed NSA employees as her personal informants. Since I personally know something of this business, I would like to add my own observations on the subject.

Seven Answers–Robert Steele in Rome

About the Idea, Articles & Chapters, Media Reports

The Questions:

1) Mr. Steele, you co-founded Earth Intelligence Network. Which are its main objectives?

2) You created the concepts of Smart Nation, Information Arbitrage, and Information Peacekeeping. May you explain them briefly?

3) You also point to the need of a faith-based global intelligence exchange. What do you mean?

4) When you speak about the sharing across the eight “tribes” of intelligence (academia, civil society, commercial, government, law enforcement, media, military, non-profit), which specific approach to intelligence do you suggest?

5) You argue that proper use of intelligence material derived from open sources (OSINT) could replace some of the more secret (and expensive) aspects of intelligence collection, claiming that “OSINT will displace 80% of the dollars devoted to secret sources and methods…”. But is OSINT really intelligence?

6) A close relationship between intelligence and diplomacy always existed. Which do you think should be the evolution of this relationship to counter the emerging threats and specifically the role of intelligence services in backing the negotiating and mediating efforts of governments?

7) Wild Card…
