This was an election that had a significantly large number of food and food safety issues on various state ballots. The election was rarely discussed from this perspective so I thought it might be useful to consider what just happened.

Al Jazeera America has produced a damning TV documentary on Israel's deliberate and unprovoked attack on the U.S.N.S. Liberty, a WWII Navy liberty ship that had been converted into electronics snooper to support the NSA by listening in on other nation's electronic transmissions.  The attack occurred in international waters, in clear weather, at 2PM on 8 June 1967, the fourth day of Israel's six day war, just prior to the Israeli shift of its main effort to the northern front in Syria (which resulted in Israel's capture of the Golan Heights, a move President Johnson had urged the Israelis not to make).

The story of this attack, its cover up, and the sellout of the American crew members by the U.S. politicians and the U.S. Navy is one of the most disgusting in the annuals of American military history.

Establishing Social Media Hashtag Standards for Disaster Response

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has just published an important, must-read report on the use of social media for disaster response. As noted by OCHA, this document was inspired by conversations with my team and I at QCRI. We jointly recognize that innovation in humanitarian technology is not enough. What is needed—and often lacking—is innovation in policymaking. Only then can humanitarian technology have widespread impact. This new think piece by OCHA seeks to catalyze enlightened policymaking.

SchwartzReport: IRS Screws Legal Marijuana Industry

Corruption, Government, Idiocy

This is a development that could assure the continuance of a marijuana black market because even where state law makes marijuana legal the federal tax code will make it impossible to create a functioning business of legal marijuana. That will be a big win for all those rice bowls are filled by prohibition continuing. It also means the ongoing destruction of tens of thousands of America families will continue.

Marijuana profits up in smoke under IRS rules

Phi Beta Iota: We are long overdue for the complete abolishment of the US tax code and the IRS, substituting the Automated Payment Transaction (APT) Tax.

Overreliance on Search Engines?

The Salon.com article titled Google Makes Us All Dumber: The Neuroscience of Search Engines probes the ever-increasing reliance on search engines and finds that the way we use them is problematic. This is due to the way our brains respond to this simplified question and answer process. The article stipulates that the harder we work for knowledge, the more likely we are to store it. When it is as simple as typing in a search query and reading a simple answer, we will forget the answer as easily as we found it. The article explains,

I have been waiting for this, the pushback from the conservatives within the Roman Church, whose views and power is threatened by this new pope. I just hope something doesn't “happen” to Francis.

Is the Pope Catholic? Critics Rally Around Benedict As Talk of Schism Looms

Conservative Catholics, angry at Pope Francis’s more moderate tone, are bucking the Church’s hierarchy.

In my personal life I build trusted relationships one tax-avoiding, jurisdiction-shopping multinational corporation at a time. Show me a company that engages in labor arbitraging and offshore production in third-world countries paying starvation wages3 and that avoids taxes through shadow companies in Ireland (Apple Operations International) so it can reap real profits in the US only to pay virtual taxes in invisible jurisdictions4—what The New York Times calls the “Double Irish with a Dutch Sandwich”5—and I’ll show you a company that deserves my full faith and confidence.
