Stepes: Human Translation at Your Fingertips

Though today’s machine translation is a convenient way to quickly get the gist of a foreign-language passage, it has its limitations; professionals still turn to human translation services when it counts. A new platform, Stepes Translate, can bridge the gap (at least until algorithms catch up). Its chat-based format makes it as convenient as machine translation, but there is an actual, multi-lingual human at the other end. BusinessWire reports, “Stepes Extends Google Translate Model to Live Human Translation.” The press release explains:

The GMO Big Lie dies on the vine

In May, the NAS issued a comprehensive report: “Genetically Engineered Crops: Experiences and Prospects.” The report’s key finding takes in the entire period of US cultivation of GMO crops:

“The nation-wide data on maize, cotton, or soybean in the United States do not show a significant signature of genetic-technology on the rate of yield increase.” — Chapter 6, Page 66.

A less ponderous translation: the genetic engineering of crops hasn’t resulted in rising output.

Noteworthy that Facebook censored this — Trump should demand an investigation into value of the undeclared in kind financial contributions of Google and Facebook to the Clinton campaign.

Huge FBI facial recognition database flawed: GAO audit

The FBI's facial recognition database of 411 million photos includes some 30 million criminal mugshots, drivers' license pictures from 16 US states, 140 million images from visa applications by foreign nationals and 6.7 million photos of individuals detained by US forces abroad, but lacks adequate safeguards for accuracy and privacy protection, a congressional audit shows. Alvaro Bedoya, who heads the Center on Privacy & Technology at Georgetown University's law school, called the report “startling,” saying it revealed that facial recognition is being used on a much larger scale than had been disclosed.
