Open Source Stupidity: The Threat to the BBC Monitoring Service

In addition to further severe budget cuts, BBC Monitoring is currently facing the loss of its Caversham Park headquarters (formerly owned by the Government) and many of its specialists who have no wish to relocate.  . . .   We therefore conclude that the Government must reinstate funding of the service in order to protect its skilled staff and specialist infrastructure. If the BBC is not willing to co-operate, then the Government should recognise the folly of the 2010 decision; take back ownership of Caversham Park; restore the modest central funding required and reconstitute the Monitoring Service as a state-owned Open Source Information Agency, in order to guarantee its future, once and for all.

Exactly one week before today’s police execution of the “Berlin truck terrorist,” NATO’s chief auditor, Yves Chandelon, was found dead in Andenne, Belgium with a bullet in his head. Official story: Suicide due to financial problems.   . . .  Meanwhile in Ankara, mainstream reports claim that the cop who assassinated Russian Ambassador Andrey Karlov last week had served on Erdogan’s security detail. This detail, and its highlighting by the Western mainstream press, adds to the case that the assassination was an Operation Gladio job designed to punish Erdogan for cozying up to Russia and accepting a Syrian peace road map with no NATO involvement. High-level Turks and Russians have been pushing this thesis.

The below essay by Jonathan Cook is a show stopper.  Cook, a British writer, is an independent reporter based in Nazareth, Israel.  Cook has proven himself to be one of  the most insightful western observers now reporting on Israel, the Palestinian conflict, and the Middle East in general. In the classic Beyond Culture, the great cultural anthropologist Edward T. Hall observed that often the most insightful analyses of a cultural phenomenon are written by people who are from a different culture and are outsiders looking in.  Cook, who is a educated outsider when it comes to U.S. culture, demonstrates in again the power of E.T. Hall’s insight, only this time, in the attached essay, he is dissecting smarmy hi jinks surrounding the U.S. presidential election.

The New York Times has been leading the charge against “fake news.” Yet its own reporting and editorial positions are often as one-sided, distorted, or downright mendacious as the worst of the pseudo-alternative websites. The Times’ coverage of wars, especially those of strategic import for the US and/or Israel (not necessarily in that order) is  a particularly fertile field of fake news flummery.
