Nobel Peace Laureate Rejects U.S. State Department – NATO – Chicago Agenda

Dear Friends,

I write to let you know that I have decided not to attend the 12th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates on 23rd-25th April, 2012, in Chicago, USA.

On 10th April, Sec. of State H. Clinton appeared on video in US State Department Web announcing plans for the forthcoming Nobel Peace Laureates Summit and said ‘The US Department of State  is proud to be an active partner in this event’.

Sec. Clinton  gave details of how the US State Dept. is working with US embassies around the world, to bring twenty students and 4 teachers from 4 countries to Chicago and explained that video conferences and portals for live streaming of events, will be managed by US State department.

I have now decided, with some sadness, not to be associated in this Partnership as I do not agree with many of the Policies of the US State Department.  Indeed I have, as a Nobel Peace Laureate, (and  in the spirit of Alfred Nobel) often called for disbandment of NATO, end of militarism and war, and for  Disarmament and demilitarization.  I cannot therefore, in good conscience, be part of a Partnership with the US State Government  (NATO).  I also believe that my participation in such a partnership would compromise my position and put in jeopardy my work in the Middle East and other countries.

I  am very disappointed  that what is a great opportunity for young people, the Nobel Laureates and organizations to listen,  learn, and exchange friendships and experiences,  has been, I believe,  seriously compromised  in such a Partnership.

However, I hope it will be an enjoyable and educational summit particularly for all the young people, and I am deeply saddened not to be with you all.

A new report circulating in the Kremlin today prepared by the Foreign Ministry on the planned re-opening of talks with Japan over the disputed Kuril Islands during the next fortnight states that Russian diplomats were “stunned” after being told by their Japanese counterparts that upwards of 40 million of their peoples were in “extreme danger” of life threatening radiation poisoning and could very well likely be faced with forced evacuations away from their countries eastern most located cities…including the world’s largest one, Tokyo.

Phi Beta Iota:  The article restates what has been known for decades.  That the WSJ should think this is in any way new is itself a statement on the WSJ state of mindlessness.  Schools today — the exceptions aside — are industrial era rote prisons that beat the creativity out of children by the fifth grade.  There is a need to learn history and memorize formulas — no question on that point — but learning to learn in the modern era — and learning to program the electronic tools with which we can learn and share and make sense despite the moral and intellectual constipation of Google, Microsoft, and Oracle, to name just three dead-end companies — this matters.

The Council of Europe to _fund an unconference in Strasbourg_ with a dramatically P2P component. Basically, we're doing a social network analysis of the web site, and then inviting the maximum number of people who want to meet each-other – i.e. it's a fully P2P selection process, not in the simple “competitive voting” sense, but in the sense of “maximizing the number of desired meetings in a set of possible invitees” – it's *really* decentralized in basic attitude.

Vinay is also looking for potential attendees to the conference who are familiar with the p2p perspective, so as to invite them to Strasbourg

“I have long argued that we need to bypass electrical utilities if we want to build a low carbon society.

Utilities, even if they are publicly owned, have an inherent economic incentive to use cheap and dirty coal or gas, as they then earn the generating revenue. With distributed solar panels at homes and business the customer earns the revenue and the utility becomes a dumb pipe. Heard that argument before? Just as we had to bypass the telephone company to build the global Internet we will need to bypass the utilities to build the future Energy Internet.

Currently the entire electrical grid is built around an architecture of large centralized generating stations. A low carbon electrical grid will need an entire different architecture – and it already exists. It is called our roadway system. With electric vehicles we can use them as a store and forward packet technology to deliver renewable energy from roadside solar panels or windmills. Not only does this enable delivery of renewable energy to homes and businesses bypassing the utilities and existing electrical grid, it also provides a clean and efficient transportation system that complements our western lifestyle.”

Deena Metzger  is a poet, novelist, essayist, storyteller, teacher, healer and medicine woman who has taught and counseled for over forty years, in the process of which she has developed therapies (Healing Stories) which creatively address life threatening diseases, spiritual and emotional crises, as well as community, political and environmental disintegration.

She has spent a lifetime investigating Story as a form of knowing and healing. As a writer, she asks: Who do we have to become to find the forms and sacred language with which to meet these times?

She conducts training groups on the spiritual, creative, political and ethical aspects of healing and peacemaking, individual, community and global, drawing deeply on alliance with spirit, indigenous teachings and the many wisdom traditions. One focus is on uniting Western medical ways with indigenous medicine traditions.

With her husband, writer/healer Michael Ortiz Hill, she has introduced the concept of Daré, meaning Council, to North America.
