90% of peer-reviewed clinical research is completely false – GreenMedInfo

A seismic shift is occurring in the field of evidence-based medicine that a rare few are aware of, but which will (and likely already does) affect everyone, as the standard of medical care today largely follows from this model.

The very life’s blood of ‘evidence-based’ medicine — peer-reviewed and published clinical research results – which legitimizes the entire infrastructure and superstructure upon which conventional medical knowledge and practice is erected, has been revealed as mostly and patently false.

Case in point: in a 2005 essay, “Why Most Published Research Findings are False,” and which is the most downloaded document of all time on PLoS, the Public Library of Medicine’s peer-reviewed, open access journal, John P. A Ioannidis explains in detail how “It can be proven that most claimed research findings are false.” And that “for many current scientific fields, claimed research findings may often be simply accurate measures of the prevailing bias.”

The Atlantic published a piece on Ioannidis’ work, back in 2010, titled “Lies, Damned Lies, and Medical Science,” well worth reading, and which opened with “Much of what medical researchers conclude in their studies is misleading, exaggerated, or flat-out wrong. So why are doctors – to a striking extent – still drawing upon misinformation in their everyday practice?

MARGUERITE GUZMÁN BOUVARD: That’s right. And before I—after I finished that book, finally the Department of Defense was letting out these statistics. They were not letting them out before. I tried to get them. I called Veterans for Common Sense, Veterans United for Truth. They have 50,000 members. They said, “Sorry, the numbers are not coming out.” And what I did get was that, in every 36 hours, one veteran from the Iraqi or Afghanistani war are committing suicide, and 18 veterans of all wars commit suicide a day. Egypt sentences Terry Jones to death for Koran burning

(AGI) – Cairo, Nov 28 – The Egyptian High Court for National Security has condemned American pastor Terry Jones to death.

Jones provoked a wave of outrage in the Islamic world for have burned several copies of the Koran. The Egyptian state media reported that the same court also gave death sentences – again in absentia – to seven persons, including directors, actors and producers of the film about the prophet Mohammed “Innocence of Muslims”.

The latter individuals are all Copts residing in the US. The sentences, Judge Saif Al-Nasr Soliman stated, were inflicted “for having insulted the Islamic religion by taking part in the production of a film which offends Islam and its prophet.” (AGI) .

SchwartzReport: Drug Industry Subversion of Medical Literature

07 Health, Commerce, Corruption

For several years now I have been writing about the corruption of the medical literature in the service of the Illness Profit System (See An Appraisal of The Illness Profit System http://www.explorejournal.com/article/S1550-8307%2810%2900291-0/fulltext). This trend has received very little! attention in the corporate media (this is the first piece I have seen in a major newspaper in months) but it has very dangerous implications for you and your family, and is specifically designed to mislead your local doctor, who guides his practice based on the papers in medical journals.

As Drug Industry’s Influence Over Research Grows, so Does the Potential for Bias

PETER WHORISKEY – The Washington Post

For drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline, the 17-page article in the New England Journal of Medicine represented a coup.

The Hypocrisy Threatening the Future of the Internet

by Jean-Christophe Nothias – Editor

GLOBAL, November 22, 2012

The upcoming World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT-12) in Dubai looms as a moment of truth for the Internet’s governing rules and economic model. In all, representatives of 193 countries will come together to review the International Telecommunication Regulations (ITR) agreed in Melbourne 25 years ago.

The United States (US) government, a leading voice in the sector, is strongly opposed to any changes to the treaty (itself an update of an earlier agreement), arguing the Internet has nothing to do with ‘traditional’ telecommunications, and – more ominously – that freedom is at stake. In contrast to this ‘no changes proposed’ plan, other member states are likely to bring different perspectives and ideas to feed into discussions at the 11-day December event, which will be moderated by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), a specialized United Nations (UN) agency. The fight is growing increasingly vocal, while raising questions of concern to all about the overwhelming power of the US in relation to the Internet and the need for structural re-balancing.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership: This is What Corporate Governance Looks Like

By: Andrew Gavin Marshall

The following is the first installment of a three-part exclusive for Occupy.com on the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Originally published at Occupy.com

In 2008, the United States Trade Representative Susan Schwab announced the U.S. entry into the Trans-Pacific Partnership talks as “a pathway to broader Asia-Pacific regional economic integration.” Originating in 2005 as a “Strategic Economic Partnership” between a few select Pacific countries, the TPP has, as of October 2012, expanded to include 11 nations in total: the United States, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Chile, New Zealand, Australia, Brunei, Singapore, Vietnam and Malaysia, with the possibility of several more joining in the future.

What makes the TPP unique is not simply the fact that it may be the largest “free trade agreement” ever negotiated, nor even the fact that only two of its roughly 26 articles actually deal with “trade,” but that it is also the most secretive trade negotiations in history, with no public oversight, input, or consultations.

Facing Uncertainty, Budget Cuts, Army Is At A Crossroads

Some changes have been resisted

By Greg Jaffe
Washington Post, November 23, 2012, Pg. 3

For much of this year, Sgt. Maj. Raymond F. Chandler III, the Army's top enlisted soldier, has traveled to bases around the world with a simple message: “We've allowed ourselves to get out of control.”

(COMMENT:  For the past couple of years we have been hearing that despite the exceptional levels of responsibility, operational experience and success, our Soldiers and company/junior field grade officers have acquired in ten plus years of combat experience, the Army's problems are rooted in a lack of garrison soldiering experience.  As the theory apparently goes, troops and leaders have been so busy deploying and training to deploy that they haven't had time to spit shine boots, wax floors, paint rocks, bash the square, etc., and, therefore they are not the Soldiers they should be.  )
