Here's How to Build a More Resilient Food System…

By John Robb

Want to get a glimpse of the future of food?

This is the page from Gulf Wild program. When you buy a fish that has a Gulf Wild ID number on it, you can find out everything about it.

Simply enter this ID number on their website or (cell phone) and it will provide you with:

  1. The bio and history of the fisherman who caught the fish.
  2. What the fish is, where the fish was caught (with a map) down to 10 miles, and when it was caught.
  3. Info on fishing practices (e.g. was it caught as part of a sustainable fisheries program?).

NOTE: Canada has a similar program called “This Fish

I believe we're going to see programs like this for all of the food (and an increasing number of products) we buy, from meats to vegetables.

Why? Info like this is addicting. Once you get it, you want it on everything.

Fortunately, it's also really easy to put a service like this together for local producers, and that's a good thing.

Here's why: This type of insight would positively differentiate fresh, high quality local produce from the generic products of indefinite age, quality, and origin we get from the global industrial system.

That would be a good thing, since it would help make local food more plentiful and that makes us ALL more resilient.

Resiliently Yours,
JOHN ROBB

SchwartzReport: Boycott Monsanto + GMO RECAP

schwartz reportI have reached a point where I have been forced to conclude that Monsanto is an evil corporation, as I understand that word. I know, from what you have written me that many of you, as have I and Ronlyn, have signed petitions against Monsanto. Now take the next step. Stop buying their products. Here is a URL where you will find the list of the companies Monsanto owns.

http://fracturedparadigm.com/2013/04/02/boycott-monsanto-a-simple-list-of-companies-to-avoid/

WARNING NOTICE:  The list is not accurate and has been removed from Phi Beta Iota.  The concept remains valid, but the public must first properly identify all Monsanto companies.  We continue to wonder why farmers are not suing Monsanto for willful trespass, unlawful deprivation of property use, and health violations related to the toxicity and third generation infertility that are associated with Monsanto's GMO offerings.

schwartz reportHere, again, we have an example of the disconnect between what the American people understand and want, and what the corporate owned Congress is focused on.

The only thing that is going to change this equation is a massive voter turnout that supports compassionate life-affirming policies and politicians prepared to act on those wishes. We did it with Elizabeth Warren, we can do it in other districts.

Nearly Half in U.S. Say Gov't Environmental Efforts Lacking
FRANK NEWPORT – The Gallup Organization

PRINCETON, NJ — Americans tilt toward the view that the government is doing too little to protect the environment — at 47% — while 16% say it is doing too much. Another 35% say the government's efforts on the environment are about right. These views have not changed much since 2010, although Americans in most years between 1992 and 2006 were more likely than they are today to say the government was doing too little to protect the environment.

schwartz reportThe Great Experiment: Genetically Modified Organisms, Scientific Integrity, and National Wellness
STEPHAN A. SCHWARTZ, Columnist – Explore: The Journal of Science and Healing

In September 2012, pictures of seriously tumorous rats (Figure 1) went viral across the Internet, setting off passionate and acrimonious exchanges between proponents and opponents of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Charges and countercharges flew like verbal grapeshot across the various levels of the digital world and scientific media as each side tried to spin what these photos meant.

‘GMOs may be creating an entire generation of cancer victims who have a frighteningly heightened risk of growing massive mammary gland tumors caused by the consumption of GM foods. We are witnessing what may turn out to be the worst and most costly blunder in the history of western science: the mass poisoning of billions of people with a toxic food crop that was never properly tested in the first place,” wrote Mike Adams, an award-winning journalist specializing in health issues, in Op-Ed News.1

GM food toxins found in the blood of 93% of unborn babies

By Sean Poulter

UK Daily Mail, 20 May 2013

GM firms claimed toxins were destroyed in the gut

Toxins implanted into GM food crops to kill pests are reaching the bloodstreams of women and unborn babies, alarming research has revealed.

A landmark study found 93 per cent of blood samples taken from pregnant women and 80 per cent from umbilical cords tested positive for traces of the chemicals.

Millions of acres in North and South America are planted with GM corn containing the toxins, which is fed in vast quantities to farm livestock around the world – including Britain.

However, it is now clear the  toxins designed to kill crop pests are reaching humans and babies in the womb – apparently through food.

It is not known what, if any, harm this causes but there is speculation it could lead to allergies, miscarriage, abnormalities or even cancer.

To date the industry has always argued that if these toxins were eaten by animals or humans they would be destroyed in the gut and pass out of the body, thus causing no harm.

Food safety authorities in Britain and Europe have accepted these assurances on the basis that GM crops are effectively no different to those produced using conventional methods.

SchwartzReport: Good and Bad Farm News, Lab Organs, Telecommuting Congress

01 Agriculture, 03 Economy, 11 Society

schwartz reportThis is some wonderful good news; it offers an alternative to the chemical and poison driven agriculture model that dominates our world now. It also offers an answer to the vast youth unemployment problem we have in our inner cities, as well as eliminating a great deal of pollution arising from trucking food across the country. It is not an entire solution to the poison model, of course, but it could go a long way toward! s ameliorating the toxic web in which we are now trapped.

The article has one major flaw: it's assessment of costs, does not include any of what I have mentioned above and, therefore should be disregarded as a criticism.

Chicago Now Home to Nation’s Largest Vertical Farm
ERIC W. DOLAN – The Raw Story

In this report we see the convergence of two major trends: Water as destiny, and climate change. This is also another argument for the today's lead story, and why the new urban farming model should be pursued.

The Drought That Ravaged US Crops Is Only Going to Get Worse
SUZANNE GOLDENBERG – Mother Jones

This is excellent news. I have been covering this trend for about eight years now, and am heartened by its growing success. This trend will eliminate the rejection issues transplant patients now face, and will allow people who are profoundly disfigured, or who would otherwise die, to survive. It will also eliminate the grey world of body parts suppliers.

Science Fiction Comes Alive as Researchers Grow Organs in Lab
GAUTAM NAIK – Wall Street Journal

I think this is what the future holds but, unlike this report, I see the main importance of this trend to a virtual Congress to be part of the Great Schism trend, in which power devolves to the states, and regional arrangements between the states, with the Federal government overseeing foreign affairs, defense and similar national issues.

The West Coast states, and the Northeastern states increasingly have less and less in common with the Southern states and some of the central states, and the quality of life in the West and Northeast is growing increasingly different than the self-inflicted ignorance, obesity, and poverty of the South.
