Because Tweets Are Not Always the Truth

Posted: 03 May 2013 04:41 PM PDT

Can emerging technologies aid in filtering out the untrusted and unverified chattering of the masses? Using the recent Boston Marathon bombings as an example where this kind of technology would be useful, the MIT Technology Review article “Preventing Misinformation from Spreading through Social Media” explains some possible solutions on their radar.

When people play detective on Reddit and other social media sites with the goal of sharing information quickly as opposed to ensuring accuracy, false accusations can be made – such as the case with Sunil Tripathi. Researchers from Masdar Institute of Technology and the Qatar Computing Research Institute plan to launch Verily as a platform that could combat situations like that one.

The article states:

“Verily aims to enlist people in collecting and analyzing evidence to confirm or debunk reports. As an incentive, it will award reputation points—or dings—to its contributors. Verily will join services like Storyful that use various manual and technical means to fact-check viral information, and apps such as Swift River that, among other things, let people set up filters on social media to provide more weight to trusted users in the torrent of posts following major events.”

This will be an interesting sector to watch as there is a growing awareness of social media’s distortional lever.

Jean Lievens: Recombinant Memetics and Narrative Networks

Recombinant Memetics

This one's quite speculative, and it's technically speaking still in the proto-science phase. But it'll only be a matter of time before scientists get a better handle on the human noosphere (the collective body of all human information) and how the proliferation of information within it impacts upon virtually all aspects of human life.

Similar to recombinant DNA (in which different genetic sequences are brought together to create something new), recombinant memetics is the study of how memes (ideas that spread from person to person) can be adjusted and merged with other memes and memeplexes (a cohesive collection of memes, like a religion) for beneficial or ‘socially therapeutic' purposes (such as combating the spread of radical and violent ideologies). This is similar to the idea of ‘memetic engineering' — which philosopher Daniel Dennett suggested could be used to maintain cultural health. Or what DARPA is currently doing via their ‘narrative control' program.

Conversations to Awaken your Soul. Live from the Hay House “I Can Do It” conference in Las Vegas. A conversation with Dr. Wayne Dyer and Bruce H. Lipton, PhD.  Bottom line: DNA is fixed, but DNA read-out is infinitely variable and radically affected by your beliefs, consciousness, and mental focus.  One third to two thirds of “medicine” is a placebo effect — this coincides with the documented view that half to two thirds of all surgical procedures are unnecessary and half to two thirds of pharmaceuticals are either ineffective or harmful.  Less well understood is the negative effect of all of the medical programming on television telling people about diseases they do not have so that they will get them.  In brief, television is making people ill.

Human Security — A New Response to Complex Threats

Written by Sadako Ogata

Today, millions of people face extreme insecurity as a result of conflicts and economic crises — not only in acute conflicts like Syria but also in many lower-profile crises. To be sure, great strides have been made since the start of this century, notably in reducing global poverty, due in large part to the concerted action and targeted goals to be achieved by 2015 that were set in motion at the landmark 2000 UN Millennium Summit. However, there is no denying that, in too many parts of our world, the international community fails to protect people whose lives are dangerously at risk.

This calls upon us to mount a new response to meeting human needs, one that recognizes the complex nature of the problems now before us. Such a response exists in the concept of human security, which was advanced a decade ago with the release of the findings of the UN Commission on Human Security, which I co-chaired with Amartya Sen.

How are humans going to become extinct?

By Sean Coughlan

EXTRACT

Dr Bostrom believes we've entered a new kind of technological era with the capacity to threaten our future as never before. These are “threats we have no track record of surviving”.

Lack of control

Likening it to a dangerous weapon in the hands of a child, he says the advance of technology has overtaken our capacity to control the possible consequences.

Experiments in areas such as synthetic biology, nanotechnology and machine intelligence are hurtling forward into the territory of the unintended and unpredictable.

Synthetic biology, where biology meets engineering, promises great medical benefits. But Dr Bostrom is concerned about unforeseen consequences in manipulating the boundaries of human biology.

Nanotechnology, working at a molecular or atomic level, could also become highly destructive if used for warfare, he argues. He has written that future governments will have a major challenge to control and restrict misuses.

There are also fears about how artificial or machine intelligence interact with the external world.

Such computer-driven “intelligence” might be a powerful tool in industry, medicine, agriculture or managing the economy.

But it also can be completely indifferent to any incidental damage.

Who? Who?
Who? Who?

In light of this blog post, it is evident the official versions of this event is losing more and more and more credibility. If they are lying about how the older brother died, what else are they lying about?

This blogger poses some pointed questions that imply the police account of the death of the oldest Boston marathon bomber is a fraudulent one. While this blogger makes no effort to offer a conspiracy theory positioned from a larger context, other than indicate the cops may be merely covering up their trigger-happy engagement with the suspect, his observation and other questions, at the very end of the post, provides further material for those of us concerned about a wider false-flag conspiracy committed by the US federal government.

If he died from the cop's trigger-happy shooting, why does the autopsy picture of the suspect not show him riddled Swiss cheese-like with many more bullets than is evident in the photo? It seems only a limited number of bullets (or “multiple”, as the MD says below), plus bomb blast shrapnel, killed him. The MD below also said his body was not disintegrated, which one would expect of a human body hit by a barrage of bullets coming from many guns. Unfortunately, the blogger says nothing about this. The autopsy picture is reproduced above.

2002 OSINT 101: Basic Training in Open Source Intelligence (OSINT)

We are long overdue — a decade overdue — for a complete re-visioning of OSINT as OSC/M4IS2, ideally under the dual sponsorship of NATO, White SOF, and the regional (continental) associations.
