HOUSE AMENDMENT WOULD CUT NSC BUDGET BY A THIRD

The House of Representatives yesterday approved an amendment to cut the budget for the National Security Council by one third in response to NSC moves to block congressional access to information.

“Over the last few months, we have had several instances in which the National Security staff has mandated that the Department of Defense and other agencies selectively withhold information from congressional oversight committees,” complained Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-NJ), who introduced the amendment. It was not immediately clear which instances of withholding he was referring to.

When I watched NBC's “Nightly News” the first time they reported on the downing of the Malaysian passenger jet, they showed video footage at the Amsterdam Airport of the relatives of those who were on the plane that was shot down. What struck me was this: not a single one appeared to be crying or showing any emotion, they were all, without exception, quite subdued or quiet, as if someone in authority told them to shut up, and they were compliant. Even the NBC news reporter commented on how unemotional they were, even though they knew the plane their loved ones were on was shot down (or whatever, given what follows below). I wondered, did the people on this footage truly have any connection to who was on the plane, was the video footage somehow manipulated or staged? Is the tail wagging the dog?

Now, along comes a report in which a rebel commander, who was in the crash area, makes an insane-sounding, bizarre claim: that the bodies scattered around the site were not “fresh” and appeared to be dead for a few days.

As China and India continue their fairly rapid paces of economic growth, a greater and greater share of extreme poverty is going to be concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa. But if we're going to make progress there, we need to have good numbers about how various economies are faring, how income is distributed within them, and so forth.

The trouble, Simon Fraser University economist Morten Jerven argues, is that those numbers are often incomplete at best and downright false at worst. It's a problem that came into sharp relief recently when Nigeria “rebased” its GDP numbers, doubling its GDP in the process.

Chuck Spinney: The Emptiness of Neo-Liberalism

This is one of the best critiques on neo-liberalism as an extreme ideology that I have read. It is long but well worth the investment in your time. On a personal note, I have long been offended by the neo-liberal hijacking of F.A. Hayek’s ideas, especially those on the relationship of central planning to the limits of information, which fit my empirical studies of the Pentagon's decision-making pathologies like a hand fits a glove. Yet, Pentagon spending is a subject that most neo-liberals, like Congressman Paul Ryan, refuse to countenance. Neo-liberals, led by Milton Freedman, have twisted Hayek’s ideas into an uber capitalist, free-market, quasi-religious dogma. Lehmann’s essay is an admirable evisceration of that extremism.
