Monsanto protest attracts 2,000 in Las Vegas

Protesters rallied in Nevada as part of a global protest against seed giant Monsanto and the genetically modified food it produces.

“March Against Monsanto” protests Saturday drew some 2,000 protesters in Las Vegas and about 150 in Reno.

Las Vegas protesters marched about one mile down Las Vegas Boulevard to the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign, while Reno protesters chanted and waved placards as they marched through downtown Reno.

Genetically modified plants are grown from seeds that are engineered to resist insecticides and herbicides, and to improve crop yields.

monsanto protestsMost corn, soybean and cotton crops grown in the U.S. today have been genetically modified. But critics say genetically modified organisms can lead to serious health conditions and harm the environment.

Monsanto Co. says it respects people’s rights to express their opinion on the topic, but maintains that its seeds improve agriculture.

‘Conclusive proof' CIA torture flights landed at Scottish airports

Investigators believe they have found “conclusive” new proof that CIA-linked planes landed regularly in Scottish airports as part of the “extraordinary rendition” programme.

The three airports which it is claimed were used as part of the “war on terror” are Aberdeen, Inverness and Wick.  A study, conducted by two academics at UK universities, found that 13 flights to these airports may have been involved in the US security service's controversial “extraordinary rendition” programme.  Extraordinary rendition was used by the US Government in the years after the September 11 attacks.  It involved the secret kidnapping, detention and transfer of terror suspects to other countries for interrogation and alleged torture.

Sam Raphael of Kingston University in London, developed the Rendition Project with Ruth Blakely, from Kent University.  He said: “The Rendition Project database provides conclusive evidence that airports in the north of Scotland were visited by numerous CIA planes at the height of the rendition and secret-detention programme.”  The project revealed data which shows five flights with CIA links landed at Wick and Inverness, with a further three landing at Aberdeen International Airport.  New details released by the study describe the planes and routes, showing that several went on to land in locations where it is claimed that terror suspects were being held in secret prisons.

The study claims to cast a new light on the operations, and has identified 11,006 flights suspected of being involved in rendition.  More than 1600 of these are thought to have landed in the UK.

Funny how stuff gets around.  More than one source is talking about Dimona, Israel as the ideal “proportionate response” from Russia with love…  Not sure why the French are allowing false stories about chemical weapons use by Assad — and we all continue to worry about Israel and the neo-cons simulating Iranian attacks on US targets, the last thing they would be doing right now when all the cards are in their favor.

Will Putin Save The World From Israel?

Shortly after Vladimir Putin was elected president of Russia in 2000, the murdered family of Tzar Nicholas was beatified. Until quite recently, the centers of Jewish power had hoped to preserve some idealized memories of the murderous Soviet system in the minds of the Russians, but it turned out to be a vain hope.

Because Bolshevism was formulated and executed by Jews, their power centers had retained fond hopes of being able some day to reconnect and reinstall some sort of Jewish lobby leverage in the Kremlin. These fond hopes were dashed by Vladimir Putin.

By the end of 2008, the Russians were expected to decide between two ideological systems: between Communism as represented by Stalin and his fanatical band of murderous Cheka Jews or the conservative and traditional values of old-fashioned Tzarism. Until quite recently, Stalin had remained slightly ahead of Tzar Nicholas II. “Then, however, the Tzar mysteriously pulled ahead.” (Die Welt, 17 July 2008, page 1)

After that, no further choice was necessary.

Seabird Bones Reveal Changes in Open-Ocean Food Chain

Remains of endangered Hawaiian petrels – both ancient and modern – show how drastically today’s open seas fish menu has changed.

A research team, led by Michigan State University and Smithsonian Institution scientists, analyzed the bones of Hawaiian petrels – birds that spend the majority of their lives foraging the open waters of the Pacific. They found that the substantial change in petrels’ eating habits, eating prey that are lower rather than higher in the food chain, coincides with the growth of industrialized fishing.

The birds’ dramatic shift in diet, shown in the current issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, leaves scientists pondering the fate of petrels as well as wondering how many other species face similar challenges.

‘Our bone record is alarming because it suggests that open-ocean food webs are changing on a large scale due to human influence,” said Peggy Ostrom, co-author and MSU zoologist. ‘Our study is among the first to address one of the great mysteries of biological oceanography – whether fishing has gone beyond an influence on targeted species to affect nontarget species and potentially, entire food webs in the open ocean.”
