90% of peer-reviewed clinical research is completely false – GreenMedInfo

GreenMedInfo Nov 9, 2012

A seismic shift is occurring in the field of evidence-based medicine that a rare few are aware of, but which will (and likely already does) affect everyone, as the standard of medical care today largely follows from this model.

The very life’s blood of ‘evidence-based’ medicine — peer-reviewed and published clinical research results – which legitimizes the entire infrastructure and superstructure upon which conventional medical knowledge and practice is erected, has been revealed as mostly and patently false.

Case in point: in a 2005 essay, “Why Most Published Research Findings are False,” and which is the most downloaded document of all time on PLoS, the Public Library of Medicine’s peer-reviewed, open access journal, John P. A Ioannidis explains in detail how “It can be proven that most claimed research findings are false.” And that “for many current scientific fields, claimed research findings may often be simply accurate measures of the prevailing bias.”

The Atlantic published a piece on Ioannidis’ work, back in 2010, titled “Lies, Damned Lies, and Medical Science,” well worth reading, and which opened with “Much of what medical researchers conclude in their studies is misleading, exaggerated, or flat-out wrong. So why are doctors – to a striking extent – still drawing upon misinformation in their everyday practice?

Marcus Aurelius

Invite your attention to attached think-piece from one of  Washington think tanks.  BLUF:  Compendium of several approaches to screw over military Services, particularly Army and Marine Corps.  Retirees, particularly working age, also targeted.  AF, Navy, SOF, cyber favored.  Several 3-stars and 4-stars signed on to this thing; not supportive of former colleagues IMHO.

Peter Peterson Strikes Out at US Defense Budget

Phi Beta Iota:  The PDF above is actually entitled “A New US Defense Strategy for a New Era.”  The following individuals have signed the report: Gordon Adams, Graham Allison, Michael J. Bayer, General B. B. Bell, Richard K. Betts, Barry M. Blechman, Ambassador Lincoln P. Bloomfield, Jr., Ambassador Richard Burt, General Games Cartwright, Lieutenant General Daniel W. Totally Addictive Education: The Future of Learning

Steven Kotler

Forbes, 8/27/2012

EXTRACT:

Today’s educational system is all about standardization. We treat every kid the same. But not every kid learns the same. Some need the microscopic first, others the macroscopic. Some people are tangential learners, some prefer their facts in a linear fashion. Some are quick, others slow. Thankfully, this is changing.

. . . . . . .

Microscopic learning doesn’t really harness this system. It builds the patterns up slowly, one block at a time, but rarely does it require the kind of intuitive BIG PATTERN RECOGNITION that macroscopic learning demands. By keeping things microscopic, we’re keeping things boring. Sure, kids learn this way, but not all kids and, anyway, it’s not much fun.

In financial ecosystems, big banks trample economic habitats and spread fiscal disease

Lead author and Princeton mathematical epidemiologist Nimalan Arinaminpathy explained that the paper represents part of an effort to examine how tumult such as the 2007-08 global financial crisis can spread throughout a banking system. Prior to the crisis, regulators typically judged banks on their individual health rather than their potential threat to the overall network, he said.

“In terms of regulation, there was really very little attention to how the financial system worked as a whole,” said Arinaminpathy, who is a postdoctoral research associate in Princeton's Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.

Yoda: Research Fraud Has Exploded in Past Decade — Pattern of Fraud in Education, Intelligence, & Research

Sad, this is.

Research fraud exploded over the last decade

And retractions don't always mention when data's fraudulent (43% of the time, in fact).

A number of studies have spotted a worrisome trend: although the number of scientific journals and articles published is increasing each year, the rate of papers being retracted as invalid is increasing even faster. Some of these are being retracted due to obvious ethical lapses—fraudulent data or plagiarism—but some past studies have suggested errors and technical problems were the cause of the majority of problems. (…) The authors find that, since 1975, the rate of retracted articles as a percent of total publications has increased nearly tenfold. Duplicate publications and plagiarism, which didn't use to be a significant problem, have boomed since 2005. And while retractions due to errors have increased, those due to fraud have increased much faster.

. . . . . . . .

Patterns of deceit

When it comes to fraud, the traditional research powers are leading the way. The US has the largest number of cases, followed by Germany and Japan. But things like plagiarism and duplicating publications are quite different, with China being a major player, and India having a large presence. These sorts of copying problems are rare in high-profile journals like Nature and Science. Instead, there was a strong correlation between the incidence of fraud and the prominence of the journal, as measured by its impact factor.
