“Remember than one one's conspiracy is another man's business plan.”

“Climate change (both sides) is all about politics.”

Phi Beta Iota: We are at the intersection of ideology, social conditioning, weak education, and the culmination of decades of power politics that have produced a severely retarded i.e. damaged collective psyche.  The collective intelligence movement can be regarded as a healing counter-cancer within this larger cancerous world non-brain.  The nuclear-tsunami in Japan is an opportunity for delving deeply into everything that can be known.  It is an opportunity to re-evaluate the known risks of nuclear power; to re-examine climate change from a holistic perspective including a rigorous look at all human processes that could be contributing to the environmental degradation of the Earth; and to establish an analytic model as well as a road-map for addressing both climate change and nuclear proliferation with the non-violent dissemination of knowledge.

TED: Salman Khan–Use video to reinvent education

04 Education, 11 Society, Advanced Cyber/IO
Salman Khan

Salman Khan talks about how and why he created the remarkable Khan Academy, a carefully structured series of educational videos offering complete curricula in math and, now, other subjects. He shows the power of interactive exercises, and calls for teachers to consider flipping the traditional classroom script — give students video lectures to watch at home, and do “homework” in the classroom with the teacher available to help.

Salman Khan: Let's use video to reinvent education

Phi Beta Iota: The huge insight here is that today's digital natives not only learn better with video than in person, but it optimizes everyone's time: the learners can “control” the content to repeat as needed, while not hearing “do you understand” over and over; and the teacher can do more and more videos that can be used by more and more people.  This flips the system–the lectures become homework, and “homework” becomes interactive teamwork in the classroom.  Technology humanizes the classroom by moving the rote outside the classroom.

Suicide turns attention to Fairfax County school discipline procedures

04 Education, 07 Other Atrocities, Advanced Cyber/IO

Suicides are never associated with a single cause, experts say. But Nick's difficulties – based on interviews with family, friends, experts and school officials, and more than 100 pages of case documents – allow a close look at how consequences intended to help a student correct course instead can fuel a growing despair.

His story follows patterns described by parents in at least a dozen other Fairfax cases with similar disciplinary consequences. Even first-time offenders are out of school for long periods – a month, two months, longer if an appeal is filed. When they return, more than half are not returned to their original schools and can face difficult transitions – new teachers, new friends and new classes.

Phi Beta Iota: We grieve for this family, and this post is a contribution to the public dialog.  In Fairfax County, the school is an extension of the police, not an extension of the family.   Originally inspired by the spread of very young Hispanic gangs into the schools–the police did a phenomenal job in shutting that down–today the police are an alternative to intelligent internal discipline.  The schools have failed to evolve and adapt to digital natives to the point that the brightest students are dropping out or turning out, with the schools becoming advanced child care.  This is not a new problem, but these suicides do offer an opportunity for re-examining what we regard as very poor administration of the Fairfax County school system philosophy and practice.

Khan Academy and BitTorrent Partner to Distribute Educational Videos

by Audrey on 11. Feb, 2011
There’s a new app in BitTorrent’s recently released App Studio today, one that really exemplifies the importance of the BitTorrent technology — the ability to distribute large files to people with low-bandwidth: Khan Academy.

The Khan Academy app will bring over 2000 educational videos to the BitTorrent community. Users can freely download and share the educational videos, whose subjects range from statistics to algebra to organic chemistry.

You can download all Khan Academy videos here.

Troops Die Because of Their Country, Not For It

US admiration for its soldiers may be deep and widespread, but interest in what they are doing is shallow and fleeting

Most of the stories told about Benjamin Moore, 23, at his funeral started in a bar and ended in a laugh. Invited to testify about his life from the pews, friend, relative, colleague and neighbour alike described a boisterous, gregarious, energetic young man they'd known in the small New Jersey town of Bordentown since he was born. “I'll love him 'til I go,” his granny said. “If I could go today and bring him back, I would.”

Grown men choked on their memories, under the gaze of swollen, reddened eyes, as they remembered a “snot-nosed kid” and a fidget who'd become a volunteer firefighter before enlisting in the military. Shortly before Benjamin left for Afghanistan, he sent a message to his cousin that began: “I'm about to go into another country where they hate me for everything I stand for.” Now he was back in a flag-draped box, killed by roadside bomb with two other soldiers in Ghazni province.

Spy Games: Intelligence Agency to Fund Video Games for Spooks

Sharon Weinberger Contributor

Scientists say video games can increase concentration, help with learning and even improve decision-making skills. Now, in an effort to improve the work of spies, the intelligence community may also resort to using educational games.

Phi Beta Iota: Nothing the secret world does in gaming can be called serious, and that includes the ridiculous DARPA initiative to model a world so as to influence what real people think.   There is no game that can help those put into IC leadership positions or those who continue to allow $75 billion a year to be spent on technical collection and contractor butts in seats that produce “at best” 4% of what top commanders need.  The insanity continues.  The ONLY “serious game” any intelligence community should be funding (and ideally all together in the aggregate) is the EarthGame designed by Medard Gabel.  Medard was co-creator with Buckminster Fuller of the analog World Game, and the only person truly qualified to create the EarthGame in the context of a global Strategic Analytic Model that allows to design a world that works for all.  Anything less is a corruption of the possible.
