Tom Atlee:

Dear Alexander,

I'm afraid I don't have much useful to offer to Robert's initiative at this time.  But I wanted to briefly note, for you and others, that evolutionary science writer Connie Barlow and former fundamentalist evangelical Christian minister Michael Dowd offer another, complementary, angle on evolution and religion (including their own thoughts on the relevance of evolutionary psychology) at Thank God for Evolution and The Great Story.

Michael is translating Christian theology into terms not only consistent with but expressive of a sacred understanding of science-based evolution.  (He half jokes that he is a CreaTHEist, while Connie is a CreAtheist!)  He is currently doing some remarkable interviews with luminaries in the field of Evolutionary Christianity.  At the very least, their work should provide you with some additional juicy quotes…

Herewith are the first two parts of Jeff St Claire's important multipart series on the systemic corruption and corporatization of the environmental movement.

A Concise History of the Rise and Fall of the Enviro Establishment

How Green Became the Color of Money

By JEFFREY ST. CLAIR, Counterpunch

Part I

New Year's Edition
December 31, 2010 – January 2, 2011

EXTRACT:  Watt, Gorsuch, Levelle and Crowell were magnificent villains for fundraising: direct mail revenues of the top environmental groups exploded tenfold from 1979 to 1981. Green became the color of money, and the rag-tag band of hardcore activists who populated the Hill in the 1970s gave way to a cadre of Ivy League-educated lobbyists, lawyers, policy wonks, research scientists and telemarketers. Executives enjoyed perks and salaries that rivaled those of corporate CEOs.

A Concise History of the Rise and Fall of the Enviro Establishment

How Green Became the Color of Money

By JEFFREY ST. CLAIR, Counterpunch

Part II

Weekend Edition
January 7 – 9, 2011

EXTRACT:

By the end of Reagan’s second term, the big environmental organizations were well-pickled in the political brine of Washington, with freshness and passion drained out.

. . . . . .

EXTRACT:  Under instructions from Bush, Lujan ordered the Bureau of Land Management to fast track the purchase of the Goldstrike Mine by Barrick Resources, a Toronto-based company controlled by financier Peter Munk. The way thus lubricated, Barrick acquired the 1,800 acre gold mine near Elko, Nevada, for the princely sum of $9,500. By the time the mine is shuttered, the Goldstrike will yield an estimated $10 billion in gold. In 1995, in consideration for his favors, George Bush was invited to join Barrick’s board of advisers.

Phi Beta Iota: The work of Jeffrey St. Claire and CounterPunch are representative of public intelligence in the public interest–the work suffers from being isolated and lacking holistic integrity–there is no means for the public to “connect the dots” or evaluate each predatory move in situ and in context.  That is the emergent challenge and opportunity of the 21st Century.

Leaked Memo Sheds Light on Mysterious Bee Die-Offs and Who's to Blame

The culprit may be a pesticide that the EPA has allowed on the market despite the fact that the company which makes the pesticide has failed to prove it is safe.

Read long detailed and compelling story….

Phi Beta Iota: This is the part that the President, the Director of the Office of Management, and the Director of National Intelligence simply do not compute.  As presented in the M4IS2 briefing in Chile, in today's complex era security is everything about everything always.  Intelligence must mature.  We have wasted 19 years going on 25.  Creating a Smart Nation and a Smart Government starts with evidence-based policy-making–intelligence is where that comes from, and public intelligence is how we nurture integrity within the government.

ClimateGate Rolling Update
ClimateGate Rolling Update

REMINDER:  Environmental Degradation, not Climate Change, is High-Level Threat #3.  Climate Change is less than 10% of that, and within Climate Change, mercury and sulfer are more important than carbon.  Furthermore, it is not possible to address any one threat without addressing the other nine (e.g. #1 Poverty) with harmonized policies from Agriculture to Water, so the bottom line is that these talks are isolated and worthless.  The world needs a serious global strategy with serious analytics, a commitment to understanding true costs of every product and service, and a commitment to bringing the five billion poor into a prosperous world at peace.  Anything less is a betrayal of the public trust.

The purpose of this site is to provide a central location to find resource status information for disaster zones and to help regions prepare for disaster.

  • Disaster Response
  • Disaster Preparedness
  • On-going Human Services

We aim to enter command & control information for regions IN ADVANCE of a disaster, AND immediately following, so as to help relief groups hit the ground running, and to help survivors immediately locate services and supplies in the event of a disaster in their region. This command & control information might be as simple as entering the name and cell phone for groups that are prepared to be first responders in a region. Or if a region's disaster community chooses, it can mean entering a list of disaster response units and/or facilities that are on “standby” for disaster response activity. There are many disaster response “command and control” systems in use by VOADs and EMA organizations. We hope to compliment what these established systems offer and we hope to offer unaffiliated groups a method for tracking their own needs and resources.

Pacific Institute's Community Strategies for Sustainability and Justice (CSSJ) Program has produced Gearing Up for Action: A Curriculum Guide for Freight Transport Justice (pdf), an important advocacy tool to build the power and capacity of  communities to participate in decision making around freight transport  issues. The guide contains popular-education-style activities that CSSJ developed and piloted in partnership with community groups and  coalitions including the West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project  and the “Ditching Dirty Diesel” Collaborative. This  user-friendly curriculum guide is designed to help communities  grappling with freight transport issues share their experiences, explore  the root causes of freight transport impacts, identify those  responsible for dealing with these causes, and develop a plan for  advocacy to advance their solutions.
