Happiness, Freedom, Equality, Rudeness: Welcome to Denmark

The miniscule Scandinavian nation is a world leader in multiple best-nation categories. But is it a role model for technoprogressives?

The fevered goals of the Enlightenment are still hot today in the cold, flat, windy peninsula and archipelago of 400 islands that contains fewer inhabitants than Maryland. Once the base camp of ravaging Vikings, Denmark is now the world leader in multiple harmonious categories.

EXTRACT: To summarize … here’s a rundown on the Danish dynamo:

#1 Happiness  ..  #1 Most Democratic  ..  #1 Most Egalitarian  ..  #1 Least Corrupt  ..  #1 Press Freedom  ..  #1 Engineering  ..  #1 Best Country for Business  ..  #1 Best Country for Entrepreneurs  ..  #1 Clean Technology / Sustainable Development  ..  #3 Fewest Prisoners Per Capita  ..  #3 Most Charitable  ..  #5 Per Capita Income  ..  #7 Women’s Equality  ..  #7 Peace

Below the Line: the meat vis a vis the USA contrast.  Reliable authorities from Denmark have informed us that this is half-fairy tale and half-real, but certainly a model to aspire to for all.

Dear friends,

So much is happening under the guise of “the budget crisis” that I thought it might be useful to deconstruct this issue a bit.

Dear All:

A really uplifting new documentary, “I AM”, has just hit theaters featuring my dear friend, Marc Barasch. This film, based in significant part on Marc's insights into empathy, altruism and social healing from his seminal book, Field Notes on the Compassionate Life is taking off.  A previous DVD by Marc, The Compassionate Life: Walking the Path of Kindness, is available online.

It made the top ten list of indie films this week and last, after a successful launch on the coasts. It will also be shown at the Conference on World Affairs in Boulder next month.

Tom Shadyac, Jim Carey director and the film¹s creator, has been touring with the film, as noted in indieWIREŒs profile of the film's strategy earlier this week. The film takes on Washington next weekend followed by Boston before expanding to other markets.

Along with Marc's truly inspiring segments, it features Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, David Suzuki, Lynn McTaggert, Ray Anderson and other luminaries. The “through-line” of this entertaining documentary is
Shadayac personal journey, following a serious accident, to discover “what's wrong with the world and what we can do about it” — a quest which he has said was triggered, in part, by Marc's own literary and life pilgrimage.

Here are some links that might be of interest:

* YouTube film trailer about universal connection being “the emerging story.”

Phi Beta Iota: A one-day global block party or a one-day sick-out would make much more sense.  This is however an important example of both the scale that is possible and the seeding that is emergent.  The times they are a-changing.

Volunteers Behind Libya Crisis Map: A True Story

Patrick Meier, iRevolutiion, 8 March 2011

My colleague Clay Shirky called it “Cognitive Surplus” in his recent book. Don Tapscott and Anthony Williams refer to it as “MacroWikinomics” in theirs.

What is cognitive surplus? The trillion hours of free time enjoyed by the world's educated population every year. Don and Tony describe MacroWikinomics as mass distributed collaboration on scales we've never seen before thanks to technology.

We're familiar with deficits and shortages, writes, Clay, but when it comes to surplus social capital, things quickly become unpredictable—especially when this capital scales thanks to the use of social networking platforms and Web 2.0 technologies. But then again, says Clay, “Many of the unexpected uses of communication tools are surprising because our old beliefs about human nature were so lousy.”

Rest of story, maps, photos….

Phi Beta Iota: Over bagels and lox yesterday, Doug Rushkoff summarized his intention for ContactCon: “to take us back to 1992, but this time with 2012 technology and human understanding.”  Here is what the US Government was told in 1992 about crowd-sourcing.  20 years and 1 trillion dollars later (20 years, average of 50 billion a year), we still have the world's most expensive ineffective wasteland pretending to “do” intelligence.  The lunacy continues.
