Jamie Drummond, Executive Director and Global Strategy for ONE, delivers a TED talk focused on the much-debated issue of the Millennium Development Goals. More specifically, he discusses what is to come after 2015 and how the new goals will be determined.

“As we gather here in Edinburgh, technocrats appointed by the UN and certain governments, with the best intentions, are busying themselves designing a new package of goals. And currently they are doing that through pretty much the same old late-20th century, top down, elite, closed process.”

Drummond explains in a ONE blog post:

What’s exciting is that, unlike in 2000 when the first goals were agreed, internet and mobile phones have spread all around the world. People are more connected than ever. So, I’d like to explore how we could use this technology to involve people from around the world in co-designing an historic first: the world’s first ever truly global poll and consultation on “What the World Wants”. Let’s crowd-source the new Millennium Development Goals. I believe that through this crowd-sourcing we won’t just improve the quality of the goals, we will also increase the quality of support for getting the goals done.

In the talk, he lays out the three steps to move the new agenda forward.

Ryan Holiday

5.0 out of 5 stars How To Become an Alpha Predator of the Media July 19, 2012

By John Robb

Ryan has written two EXPLOSIVE books in one package. It's VERY easy to read. It's something you can digest in an afternoon.

Better yet: Ryan, unlike many others, has the credentials to write it. He is the mastermind behind much of the explosive success of American Apparel and Tucker Max. You can't find anyone with more insider cred than that (he's also a long time Global Guerrillas reader!).

The first book rips back the covers on our corrupt media system.

He shows how sites like Gawker, Huffington Post, Drudge, Brietbart, eHow (Demand Media), Daily Kos, Business Insider, and many others have ushered in the return of Yellow Journalism. We now live in an age where the news is manufactured and often based on brazen falsities. Why? Money. To generate a fraction of a cent per page view. Worse, these sites now drive the news we see in our increasingly bankrupt traditional media (CNN, ABC…). Where will the return of Yellow Journalism lead us? Who knows, but I can assure you it isn't a good place.

The (more important) second book is an instruction manual on how to become an Alpha Predator of the media world.

4.0 out of 5 stars Part of the Puzzle — USA Refuses to Be Real About Middle East, July 19, 2012

I find it very interesting that this book and the author's YouTube — the first two years old, the second one year old — have emerged into the public space now, as Israel appears to be mounting false flag attacks in Bulgaria and in Israel (the latter a staged attack on Hillary Clinton that defies belief), and may well be preparing to e frame Iran with a false flag attack against the Olympics in London.

I post this review solely to make one point and offer several links.

POINT: The US Government is bought and paid by as far as the Saudis are concerned. Regardless of which of the two-party tyranny branches are in power, the White House and Congress are, in Robert Bauer's immortal words, like a whore on the bed, her legs spread, her eyes lusting for the wallet on the bureau. It is not possible for the US to have a credible sustainable foreign policy when politicians, with the active complicity of the most senior intelligence “professionals” refuse to grasp the truth and continue to favor relations with dictators over a more earnest policy of support for emerging democratic tendencies.

Who? Who?

The most interesting item mentioned in this article about this self-published book from a CIA contractor, is the following:

“ALEXANDRIA, Va. (CN) – Former CIA contractor Jonathan Scherck published a book “containing intelligence-related information” without the CIA's permission and in violation of his secrecy agreements, the United States claims in Federal Court…In the excerpt from his book, Scherck writes: “As I will lay out in much greater detail, I believe the People's Republic of China delivered a turn-key nuclear ballistic missile system to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia over the course of several years beginning no later than December 2003. This illicit transfer, a flagrant violation of the Non-Proliferation Treaty, occurred while Dick Cheney was managing both the intelligence and foreign policy portfolios of the George W. Bush administration.”  Scherck says in the book that he worked as a collection management officer in the CIA from mid-January 2005 to April 3, 2007.  “I was one of only a few individuals in Washington with access to what was being said overseas at the time about Saudi Arabia's procurement of a new ballistic missile system from China,” according to the book. “I read things, I heard things, I saw things. Admittedly, I did not see all – but I saw enough.”

Phi Beta Iota:  He is not making money on the book — it has sold under 500 copies at Amazon, yielding 45% of retail to the author.  either the CIA is clueless on how its lawsuits actually promote books that would otherwise remain obscure, or someone on the political side has decided Israel needs an assist in publicizing Middle Eastern threats, however nominal, to Israel.

The Expanding Role of Open Source Information and Social Media for the Intelligence Community

Open source information and social media have caused a huge growth in the amount of data available to the intelligence community. In a budget constrained environment, this information explosion may become a major source for producing intelligence and protecting our nation.

Tuesday, July 31, 2012 7:30 AM – 9:30 AM National Press sClub

Phi Beta Iota:  The US Intelligence Community costs over $80 billion dollars a year and produces “at best” 4% of what a major commander needs to know (and nothing for everyone else including Cabinet Secretaries, Assistant Secretaries, and desk officers.  The nominal Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) element within the secret world is a runt off-spring of the same bad practices.  We have wasted a quarter century on bad leaders, bad methods, bad contracts, and abysmally derelict marginal outcomes.

The Libor Scandal In Full Perspective

The article about the Libor scandal, coauthored with Nomi Prins, received much attention, with Internet repostings, foreign translation, and video interviews. To further clarify the situation, this article brings to the forefront implications that might not be obvious to those without insider experience and knowledge.

EXTRACT:

Does this mean that the US and UK financial systems can only be kept afloat by fraud that harms purchasers of interest rate swaps, which include municipalities advised by sellers of interest rate swaps, and those with saving accounts?

The answer is yes, but the Libor scandal is only a small part of the interest rate rigging scandal. The Federal Reserve itself has been rigging interest rates. How else could debt issued in profusion be bearing negative interest rates?

As villainous as they might be, Barclays bank chief executive Bob Diamond, Jamie Dimon of JP Morgan, and Lloyd Blankfein of Goldman Sachs are not the main villains. The main villains are former Treasury Secretary and Goldman Sachs chairman Robert Rubin, who pushed Congress for the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act, and the sponsors of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley bill, which repealed the Glass-Steagall Act. Glass-Steagall was put in place in 1933 in order to prevent the kind of financial excesses that produced the current ongoing financial crisis.

CONCLUSION:

To sum up, what has happened is that irresponsible and thoughtless–in fact, ideological–deregulation of the financial sector has caused a financial crisis that can only be managed by fraud. Civil damages might be paid, but to halt the fraud itself would mean the collapse of the financial system. Those in charge of the system would prefer the collapse to come from outside, such as from a collapse in the value of the dollar that could be blamed on foreigners, because an outside cause gives them something to blame other than themselves.
