This is one of two first-rate books on crop circles and their implications for mankind that I recommend. This one is the “coffee table” book, with an absolutely sensational collection of clear color photographs that provide what I believe may be the single best collection of distinct crop circles at distinct times and places on the planet.

This book is however light on the text and the thinking. It should be read in conjunction with “Open Minds: A Journal of Extraordinary Encounters, Crop Circles, and Resonance,” by Simeon Hein, Ph.D.

I am persuaded of three things by these books taken together and my various other readings:

1) The Earth is alive and everything on it is a web of life that has a global consciousness–the butterfly effect and the mind over matter effects are real.

2) There exist other forms of intelligence at least equal if not vastly superior to ours elsewhere, and I speculate from some of this reading that we are a “diversity enhancer” for a larger constellation of planets, and that we may also be failing a longer-term test to determine if we are ready for inter-planetary interaction.

3) There are, between books like this and the many very intelligent people that tend NOT to go into politics, clear possibilities for our rising to the challenge. We simply have not focused as a Collective Intelligence or World Brain, and we need to do so before we destroy our planet and our species.

Both books are almost mesmerizing.

Do yourself a favor and buy “Vital Signs: A Complete Guide to the Crop Circle Mystery and Why It is NOT a Hoax” by Andy Thomas. The superb collection of color photographs from many times and places there will peak your interest and inoculate you from losing interest in this book, “Opening Minds,” which you should read AFTER enjoying “Vital Signs.” See also my review of “Vital Signs” for points I will not repeat here.

This book, while weak on photographs and illustrations, is stronger on thinking and cross fertilization. I drew three points out of it:

1) Humans are barely scratching the surface of what they can do with their full conscious and sub-conscious powers. Our culture has literally destroyed much of our inherent talent for thinking and intuiting and remote viewing and sub-conscious communications.

2) There is, according to this author, and I for one believe him, clear evidence that remote viewing, when focused on extra-terrestrial targets (e.g. Martian Scientists), appears to open channels for receiving from those extra-terrestrial targets, direct sub-conscious inputs and assistance.

3) Finally, that crop formations, both those that humans make and those that seem to appear as gigantic beacons to some form of intelligence viewing the Earth from afar, are a focal point where a blending of different energies take place–magnetic fields, light fields, thought fields.

I put both these books down in a pensive mood. There is so much that is going wrong with the world, and yet there is so much that could be gotten right if we just harnessed the distributed intelligence of everyone, including the five billion poor at the bottom of the pyramid. We are–despite our millions of years of so-called development as a species–evidently at the 2nd grade level, still pooping in our crib, throwing tantrums, spilling food and breaking things. One can only gasp at the potential of the human species if it ever “grew up.”

These are both serious and very worthwhile books to buy and read.

Review DVD War of the Worlds

Gripping for Children, Annoying for Adults,

My ten-year old loved this movie and found it gripping. I found it annoying. A pale green overcast to the film, a general sense of staleness. The plot was so poorly developed that what really stood out in the first half of the movie was how stupid kids can be, not listening to adults when danger is present, and blowing it with childish screams at exactly the wrong moment. Perhaps this is Hollywood “fast food” and intended to be dramatic.

This comment may strike many as off-topic, but if you glance over my other 600 reviews (almost all of non-fiction about global issues), you might see the logic. Toward the end of the movie, with a bow toward Huntingon's “Clash of Civilization,” I saw the “aliens” as the U.S. and the humans as “everyone else.” The aliens crashed through, sucked blood (oil), destroyed everything in their path. In the end, they were undone by a suicidal terrorist (Tom Cruise) who was willing to go into the bowels of the beast to explode grenades, but was saved by a uniformed pal so we could have a happy ending.

I do not know if H.G. Well intended this (his book, “The World Brain” is one of the most important books anyone could ready right now as we prepare to create that World Brain and empower people), but all the reading I am doing is putting forward multiple world wars: between humans and bacteria; between individuals and corporations; between reality-based policy and zealot faith-based policy; between radicalized Islam and radicalized Judiaism that has merged with extremist evangelical Christianity.

At the end, I gave the movie four stars instead of three because it did cause me to think and reflect on the modern implications of man versus machine.

Two points are worthy of emphasis: 1) the paradigm shift is always forced and 2) until the paradigm shift occurs, always suddenly, the incumbents can comfortably explain everything with their existing paradigm. There will be many from the current “laissez faire” academics without accountability environment who would be critical of this book, but the fact is that it's fundamentals are on target; as the sociology of knowledge has shown time and time again, “thinkers” are nepotistic, incestuous, and generally lazy, as well as mono-lingual and culturally-constrained, and it takes a major shock-wave to push any given intellectual domain up to the next plateau.

First published in 1938, a modern edition is vastly improved by the addition of a critical introduction by Alan Mayne. Very much focused on how a world-brain might alter national policy-making, how Public Opinion or an “Open Conspiracy” might restore common sense and popular control to arenas previously reserved for an elite. The information functionality of the World Brain easily anticipated the world wide web as it might evolve over the next 20-30 years: comprehensive, up to date, distributed, classification scheme, dynamic, indexes, summaries and surveys, freely available and easily accessible. We have a long way to go, but the framework is there. The communication functions of the world brain would include a highly effective information retrieval system, selective dissemination of information, efficient communication facilities, effective presentation, popular education, public and individual awareness for all issues, and facilitate social networking between organizations, groups, and individuals. The world brain is the “virtual intelligence community” qua noosphere. This is one of the fundamental references for anyone thinking about the future of politics, economics, or social systems.

Co-Evolution of Man and Machine,

Kevin has produced what I regard as one of the top five books of this decade. A very tough read but worth the effort. I had not understood the entire theory of co-evolution developed by Stewart Brand and represented in the Co-Evolution Quarterly and The Whole Earth until I read this book. Kevin introduces the concept of the “hive mind”, addresses how biological systems handle complexity, moves over into industrial ecology and network economics, and concludes with many inspiring reflections on the convergence of biological and technical systems. He was easily a decade if not two ahead of his time.
